Sega Genesis GAME FACTORY BLUE GAME FACTORY GREEN Blockbuster Video Game Cartridges2

Looks like the price has finally gone up a bit on these.

Blockbuster Game Factory was a service offered in 1994. Blockbuster would offer consumers the Sega Mega Drive games of their choice, which they would flash over dial-up onto a reprogrammable cartridge. The idea behind the service was that Blockbuster would have the entire Mega Drive software library available to rent, ending the problem of not being able to find a game to rent because someone else already rented it. The service was successful at first, but the combination of slow speed of dial-up (causing consumer satisfaction to drop) and issues licensing games for release caused the service was discontinued.

It is unknown if the service had any exclusive games, alternate revisions of existing games, was available outside the United States, or covered other consoles. It is also unknown if the cartridges had any data on them before being flashed with a game.

There has also been a long rumored Red Version, but one has never shown up.

Auction Here. This seller also has Green Carts for $40.00.

Ecco The Dolphin Limited Edition Box Set Sega Genesis Mega Drive1

I have no idea how rare this is, except a lot. This is a Limited Edition from where Sega made a deal with a London aquarium which housed a real dolphin named Ecco (who would benefit from the proceeds).

A similar boxed set from Tides of Time sold for $200+ earlier this year, but was missing several items.

Auction Here - Buyer knows it is overpriced, but is hoping to solicit serious offers.

A crazy SEGA fan has crammed a SEGA CD, 32X and Genesis into a Saturn shell and dubbed it the "SEGA Fusion". Genesis games, Sega CD games, Sega 32X games, Sega 32X CD games! Play it all! No Sega Master System games with a converter though (because of the 32X).

Auction Here - Looks surprisingly good and has a ton of bids already.

Sega Genesis Blockbuster World Video Game Championships II

$

Sega Genesis Blockbuster World Video Game Championships II 300x179Last time I posted about one of these, there were less than five copies confirmed to exist, with three of them passing through the hands of Nicola (one of gameSniped original writers and a Italian collector). Not sure if this is a previously unknown copy.

In 1995 Blockbuster organized their second Video Game Championship. For SNES, Rare built the well known Donkey Kong Competition Edition cart. For Genesis, Acclaim made this cart.

There were two categories, up to 13 and over 14 years old. You also had to choose to compete on the SNES or Genesis. From June 14th to July 9th there was a Store Championship Competition, then the Finals. Each store had to award a Store Champions with a prize of free rentals for the next two years (two games a month).

The game itself contains watered down versions of NBA Jam Tournament Edition and Judge Dredd.

Unlike the Donky Kong cart however, this cart could not be won, nor bought. Store owners were ordered to destroy the cart after the competition. Not surprisingly however, that didn't always happen.

I know a copy sold circa 2005 - 2007 (by Nicola) for $2,068.05, a horrible condition copy in 2010 for $2,000 and last year a copy sold for $4,500 - $5,000.

Auction Here - The top of the cart looks like the seller has obscured the "Not For Resale" text in the image.

Also:

1994 Blockbuster World Video Game Championship Hat & Pin - Would go great with the cart.
PS2 Test System - Only $50 currently.
Sealed Early 1990s Nintendo Mario Brothers "MARIO MANIA MOBILE" Retail Advertising Display M30MA - Only $15 currently.
Nintendo Merchandising Chair - No idea on the origins of this. I doubt the German seller is going to get the almost $2k he's asking.
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker Version ZERO Play Arts Kai Figure - Very rare variant of the sneaking suit Snake figure from the Peace Walker line of Play Arts Kai. This version was a limited production run of 100, and was only available to purchase at the 2010 Tokyo Gameshow or 2010 San Diego Comic Con.
Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom Official Paperback Strategy Guide Hint Book - I have a feeling this will fetch a nice price. The NES equivalents go for insane prices.

Rare 90s Unreleased Video Game Manuscript for SEGA GENESIS Mutant Speed Demons 1 150x150Someone sent me this today, and boy am I jealous. This is an epic one of a kind item and the price was an absolute steal.

Rare and hefty (100-200 pages!) original manuscript/game outline for this unreleased sci-fi motorcycle mutant biker gang game targeted for Sega Genesis hardware. Created by Michael Menheim for New Wave Graphics, Inc.

A prototype of the game was found in 2009, but the data was unfortunately long gone.

Completed auction here.

Sonic Crackers Sega Genesis Prototype (Unreleased Game)

$
0
0

Sonic Crackers is pretty well known for an unreleased game, although there is not really an explanation as to where it came from and what exactly it was supposed to become. The basic consensus seems to be that this was an early engine test for the game that become known as Knuckles Chaotix for the 32X. There are a bunch of these out there if memory serves me correct.

If this is like all the known Sonic Crackers carts (as well as the ROM) when the game is started you will need to press the start button on the controller before the controller before the SEGA logo fills the screen. Otherwise the game will lock up and will need to be reset. I think other copies had dipswitches as well.

It's been years since I've played the rom, but essentially the game has Sonic and Tails joined together by a band of rings. The levels wen't complete, but they were interesting.

Big Sega auctions don't come up too often so when there is a great crop like the one below it's a great time. The highlights here are the Gunstar Heroes pre-release prototype and a unique Sega arcade prototype arcade game called Flash Beats. But any of these itmes would be great additions to your Sega collection.

Blockbuster Word Video Game Championship II Competition Sega NBA Jam Judge Dredd - Really expensive at $6,000 but a holy grail if you can afford it.

Trouble Shooter prototype cartridge - For those who are not familiar with the game, Trouble Shooter is like Capcom's Forgotten Worlds with girl protagonists. The game has great graphics and cut scenes as well as quirky enemies and weapons. The seller hasn't played through the full game so doesn't know if there are any differences from the retail copy.

Gunstar Heroes pre-release prototype - I was really interested in this auction so I emailed the seller to get more details.  Unlike many "prototypes" on Ebay, the seller confirmed that there are indeed many differences between this prototype and the retail copy.  He sent me a link which outlines all the differences.

Congo Bongo Atari 2600 prototype - After finding success with Zaxxon in 1982, Sega beefed up its isometric arcade hardware and released Congo Bongo in 1983.  Basically a pseudo-3D version of Donkey Kong, the game was ported to almost every home platform and computer of the time.  The 2600 version looks pretty weak compared to the arcade original but if you collect vintage Atari it's a cool looking piece to have.

Flash Beats prototype, only 20 made - An interesting game where you bounce a colored light back and forth with an opponent across five light tubes.  The seller claims only 20 were ever made.  If you have a big game room and need a focal point for the room this might be it.

Virtua Fighter Mini Sega Game Gear - Sega made a few themed Game Gears, the most famous of which is the Red Coca Cola model.  This Japanese unit comes decked out with a younger looking Akira plastered all over the machine, a boxed copy of Virtua Fighter Mini, and another game I can't figure out.

Doraemon Limited Package - This is a great little platformer staring Japan's favorite time traveling, robotic cat.  This cute box set comes with three Doraemon themed pencils, an eraser, and pencil case.  I've had one of these sets for years and while this particular auction is a bit pricey, if you can afford it, it's a nice piece to have.

The Amazing Spider Man: Web of Fire - I've watched a few game footage clips and I still can't figure out why this game is so expensive.  I guess the rumored 1,500 copies produced is the reason for all the hype.

Sega France Sonic the Hedgehog 20th Anniversary Anti-Aging Cream - This has got to be the strangest promotional item I have ever seen.  The seller claims that Sega France snuck this out without official approval from Sonic Team or Sega Corporate.  Is the cream blue?  At 800 bucks I don't care to find out.

Well, it looks like I've dragged myself out of whatever hole I have been hiding in to share a small bit of gaming goodness currently up for grabs on the grand ol' site known as ebay!  Pardon myself for being a bit rusty, but hopefully you'll bear with me.  I've been out of looking for anything interesting for a bit, so lets see what some of my old and outdated searches lead us to!

Behold!  That which haunts my dreams at night most recently...these handmade Zelda clay figures are certainly something.  The fact that I don't recognize any of the characters except for the happy mask salesman makes me feel like I'm a bad Zelda fan...

-Legend of Zelda LttP Shield Display:  With the release of the new 3DS Link game, I would expect to see some high ticket Zelda items raise even a bit higher....it's a shame there is some noticeable cosmetic damage to this, but these show up so infrequently that you can't be too picky nowadays!

-World of Nintendo Globe Sign:  Does anyone else miss the gobs of World of Nintendo signage hanging in retail stores?

-Super Mario 3 McDonald's Store Display

-Gameboy Color Ceiling Hanger System Display:  I remember seeing these in retail stores and always imagined them landing on my head as I passed through....strangely enough, this never happened.

-SNES & N64 Shelf Talkers

-Some Terrible Genesis Sports Shelf Displays

I love seeing this cart show up.

If you've never heard of the game, its kinda rare. As of three years ago, less than five copies have been confirmed to exist, with three of them passing through the hands of our own Nicola. Not sure what the count on them is now. If you have any luck finding one of these in the wild, let me know next time you go to a Casino, as I'd like to tag along on your luck. If you like casino games, we recommend that you visit this website, although it’s in Norwegian

Apparently, in 1995 Blockbuster organized their second Video Game Championship. There were two categories, up to 13 and over 14 years old. You also had to choose to compete on the SNES or Genesis. From June 14th to July 9th there was a Store Championship Competition, then the WVGC-Finals. Each store had to award a Store Champions with a prize of free rentals for the next two years (two games a month).

The best eleven players then won a trip to San Francisco for the final fight in August, inside the GamePro (gaming magazine) HQ.

For SNES, Rare built the well known Donkey Kong Competition Edition cart. For Genesis, Acclaim made this cart. Unlike the DK cart however, this cart could not be won, nor bought. Store owners were ordered to destroy the cart after the competition. Not surprisingly however, that didn't always happen.

The last copy (that I remember), went for a final price of $2,068.05. Since then there has been others listed, including one for $50,000. Recently ShopGoodwill had one sell in a lot for an absurd amount. However, it appears it ended up unpaid and was relisted on eBay.

Final price ended up at $2,050.00.

Super Fighter Team just announced a new pre-order for two new Sega Genesis titles, Magic Girl and Cascade.

Thank you for your interest in Magic Girl! Magic Girl is a vertical shooter that puts you in the role of a young girl fighting to save her entire planet from certain doom. It is a harsh reality for Ling Ling, whose heart is filled with sorrow over the suffering of her people. But there is no time for tears, as she must rush to avenge the fallen. Only with your careful guidance will she be able to prevail over the enemy and restore her planet to a semblance of its former peace and prosperity. Magic Girl was developed by Gamtec in Taiwan. In addition to translating the game into English, we at Super Fighter Team have also fixed a few bugs that plagued the Chinese original.

Thank you for your interest in Cascade! Cascade is a dice-based puzzler set in outer space, where your skill will be judged by wacky aliens.

This never before seen game will amuse you with its quirky aliens that welcome you with silly spoken lines such as, “Oh no, a human!” and “May the dice be with you.” It also features a competetive two player mode.

Hey! It takes cunning and quick thinking to blast through each successive level of Cascade! Complete all seven levels and you will be welcomed to the planet Cascadia. But what awaits you there: Fame? Fortune? The game's production credits? Only one way to find out...

Cascade was developed by Epyx, and initially slated for release only in Japan.

Price on each is $40 plus shipping and expected release date is 2015.

Zelda Outlands: The Fan Made Legend of Zelda NES Game

I was reading back through older posts on the site and really enjoyed the post about Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes. I know  many of you guys really enjoyed that post as well. So, I wanted to return to the subject of romhacking (or, more specifically, romhacking vintage video games). I'm not sure if you guys know this, but the original Legend of Zelda NES is one of my all time favorite video games of any era. Heck, my name is Link after all. Naturally, my favorite custom, fan made NES rom has to be Zelda Outlands.

Zelda OutlandsIf you're unfamiliar with video game hacks or rom hacking, it's custom content that fans and coders add into rom files or custom game cartridges. Many times, these coders use the game's original content to build a custom, fan sequel (as is the case with this unofficial Legend of Zelda game, Zelda Outlands). But, some designers use the content to add their own special content into a game while retaining the core components of the source material (such as the custom modded 2015 edition of Tecmo Super Bowl that includes all 32 NFL franchise teams and current players).

Zelda Overlands takes place right where the first two Legend of Zelda NES games end. The Thunderbird survived its battle with Link and is seeking revenge. The Thunderbird steals the Triforce of Power and makes off to Hyrule's neighbor, the Outlands. This completely new game (well, sort of) spans 18 different dungeons. Zelda even makes a cameo supplying Link with items and game tips.

The best way to look at this game is as a complete face lift or overhaul from the original Legend of Zelda. You face new monsters, a completely new overworld (the developer promises no similarities to the old one), custom graphics, and even bug fixes to the old system. This game is pretty neat. You can really tell just how much love went into making this game. Click here to download this ROM to play on an emulator on your 50" plasma :) If you're feeling a bit more 'retro' and prefer hardware cartridges to ROM files, you should be able to scoop up the 'real thing' on ebay here. I thought it would be fitting to provide you guys with links to some of my other favorite fan made NES game hacks. Enjoy!

  • Tecmo Super Bowl 2015 - Going rate of eBay appears to be right around the $50 mark BIN. Some of you may scoff at the idea of spending so much money on a football game that isn't called Madden. For others, Tecmo is worth it...
  • Mario Adventure NES - Getting a little harder to find on eBay these days. You can find more info on it here.
  • The S Factor: Sonia and Silver - Couldn't find on eBay. But, Ali Express seems to have it at the moment. Keep in mind, this is a Genesis cart Nintendo collectors.
  • Castlevania: Chorus of Mysteries - I personally like this version almost as much as the original. This version presents brand new challenges without resorting to cheap difficulty levels

Transformation of Wrestling Games Part 2: the 16 Bit Era

The 16-bit era was a strange and confusing time for video game fans of wrestling. Only a hand-full of wrestling video games worth mentioning were released in the US. In fact, some people may argue that WWE video games/WWF games didn't really come into their own until the following generation. In fact, some of you may be more accustomed with these latter games rather than the ones from this era. Regardless, despite the small number of wrestling games on the SNES and Genesis, what was being offered at this period was definitely high quality. The games were far and away better than any of the games that came before. This second part of our continuing look at the history of wrestling video games will focus on the early 90's.

Wrestling Games

WWF Super Wrestlemania was one of the first forays into wrestling on the 16-bit consoles

WWF Super Wrestlemania marked the first foray into 16 bit games. The game offered tons of flash and style (for the time, of course). But, the moves were really limited. It was a nice first attempt. But, the game didn't have much beyond the shallow likeness of the wrestlers' images. With that being said, SW introduced the tug of war style grappling which the other 16-bit games would use variations of. So, that was pretty cool and innovative I suppose. SNES owners didn't get the unique finishing moves like the Sega counterpart. However, the SNES version had a larger roster. But, the game was all together mediocre compared to the following games of the era. Things didn't really heat up until the next game. And, that leads us to...

WWF Royal Rumble serves as an example of one of the best Genesis and SNES wrestling games to leave its mark on the 16-bit era. The controls were tighter and more responsive than any of the other wrestling games for the NES or Sega Master System. The developers knew that they had to make wrestlers move faster and more fluidly in order to appeal to the fans. Everyone was sick and tired of sluggish characters moving on the screen. Royal Rumble brought about a welcome change of fully licensed wrestlers with the individualized moves and appearances of their respective real life counterparts. Check out the video to see just how fluid the movement was for its time.

The game really was impressive. Sculpted Software somehow managed to squeeze 6 wrestlers onscreen at the same time without any noticeable slow down. The number of moves you could pull off per fighter was higher than anything ever seen before. Options were pretty much wide open. Sure, your matches were limited to one-on-one, tag team, triple tag, and Royal Rumble. But, this offered far more options than ever before. I remember being completely blown away playing this game for the first time back in '93. Never before had wrestling fans seen so much action on the screen at once in a console game. For its time, this was possibly the best wrestling based game to come out in North America.

Graphics for WWF Royal Rumble were top-notch. However, the game strained the 16-bit SNES and Genesis (in all of its blast processing wonder) to their maximum power. The graphics and wrestlers may have looked cartoon-ish. But, I personally see that as part of the whole appeal. 80's and early 90's WWF was outlandish and comic book like. My friends and I absolutely loved the way the game looked – it made them feel like they're watching an interactive cartoon version of the WWF. There were no missing sprites or slowed down animations. Everything ran smooth as butta'. The sound effects in RR were startling. I remember my cousin saying that the sounds didn't sound too far off from a real WWF match.

WCW Video GamesUnfortunately, WCW video games weren't a super huge hit in the 90s. I personally blame Doom and platformers like Sonic. WCW SuperBrawl Wrestling was pretty much it for the SNES and Genesis. Named after the pay-per-view, SuperBrawl bordered on mediocre. Don't get me wrong, the graphics weren't too shabby. What bothered me most was the overhead perspective. The perspective was similar to the vastly superior Super Fire Pro Wrestler. But, the controls were pretty crappy compared to the latter game. And, I just couldn't go gel with such a slow paced game after playing the faster WWF RR. Each wrestler had the same shared moves except for their signature attacks (which really limited the options) – moves included a variety of kicks, diving attacks, an atomic drop, tombstone piledrivers, suplexes, punches, and elbow shots. Again, RR had tons of unique moves depending on your choice of wrestler. Not the case here.

To its credit, the game included some cool modes such as single play, tag team, four team tournaments, and the Ultimate Challenge (where players were tasked with defeating every wrestler in the game's roster). You also hear commentary from Tony Schiavone. The 'commentary' is basic, but at least it's there.

I personally agree with these WCW video games critics. It offered tons of features, but I just couldn't overlook the poor controls, sub-par animations, and outright bad gameplay. It was incredibly hard, and sometimes downright impossible to line-up a wrestler perfectly and perform a move. WCW committed the ultimate sin in video games: it wasn't fun to play. If you want to see the game in action, you can check out some brief game play here.

WWF Games

WWF Raw stands as one of the best wrestling video games made in this era.

It was time for WWF games to return to the limelight with WWF Royal Rumble's sequel: WWF Raw – this game was the last one in LJN's 16-bit WWF trilogy. Players enjoyed One-on-One matches, Tag Team, Bedlam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, or Raw Endurance Matches which were really awesome. The thing that differentiates Raw from other games of the time is the fact that they didn't sacrifice game play for graphics. Some wrestlers had some shared moves. On the whole, wrestlers had different move sets including mega moves. For the first time, this wrestling game kept track of stats: speed, strength, stamina, and weight.

The player would win a game when his opponent's energy was depleted. Once his energy was low enough, the wrestler could perform his or her (yes, this is one of the first WWF games to feature female wrestlers) signature move. More energy meant more damage to your enemy.

The thing that I really enjoyed most about WWF Raw is its finishing moves. They were based on the wrestler's real-life unique moves, and it made the game feel more realistic. They needed to be performed in a specific position by punching in a button combination which was the same for every wrestler.

I loved it. Some people complained that Raw ran off of the same engine as Royal Rumble. But, I also happened to love RR when I first played it. So, my love for this game just made sense to my impressionable kid mind. It was more of the same awesome game! In my opinion, WWF Raw was the perfected version of Royal Rumble. I remember sinking countless hours into this game a kid. Awesome stuff! Check out some of the game play to see what you've been missing. This is the precursor to (or cusp of) the attitude era!

  • WWF Super Wrestlemania SNES - Carts are going for yard sale prices well under $10. Not very rare so the bargains abound!
  • WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game - Same as above. This version includes the aforementioned moves.
  • WWF Royal Rumble for SNES and Sega Genesis - The great thing about these licensed wrestling games is that they're pretty common on eBay and cheap!
  • WCW SuperBrawl Wrestling SNES - Not at all rare. But, for whatever reason, these games tend to sell for about $10 more than the superior Royal Rumble. I hated it as a kid. Perhaps you'll love it...
  • WWF Raw SNES Version / Sega Genesis / Gameboy / Game Gear - SNES is pretty common and sells about the same price as WCW. Ditto for Genesis. Graphics and game play are best on SNES version. Game Gear is a stunted version of the console game with two additional wrestlers. The Gameboy version is just terrible. Avoid unless you're a collector or incredibly nostalgic. Gameboy version is becoming more rare but price remains low under $10.
  • WWF Rage in a Cage - Not too familiar with this Sega CD game. But, I've heard it's one of the better WWF games for a Sega system at the time. I believe this is the first game to feature cage matches. Prices are pretty high (between $20 to $50).
